ARTIST SPOTLIGHT
MARIA WEBER
Maria and her husband Jim Bassett moved from Denver to Buena Vista in 1999, after having their log home completed a few miles north of town. Maria’s mom, a lifelong poet and artist, had recently passed away. It became Maria’s first creative challenge to organize her mom’s poetry collection and donate it to her mom’s hometown library in Kingsport, Tennessee. In the five years it took her to do this, Maria wrote a book about the relationship with her mother, which was sometimes rocky, sometimes mystical.
In Maria’s memoir, she answered the question: “Can a “rocky” mother-daughter relationship be healed when one of them is on the Other Side?” The answer, she discovered, was “yes.” Adding to that question was a deeper mystery. In Maria’s early life, she received periodic letters from a “Woods Fairy” named Queen Thimble Bee. Who was this Being? Was it her mom? Or was there really a fairy in collusion with her mother? Someone had to hold the pen that wrote the letters! Maria’s research, with assistance from women with “extra-sensory abilities” led her to understand that, indeed, this mystical being did exist. In addition to the theme of healing a mother-daughter relationship and a true story about a fairy friend, there is more. Maria has included a “Notes and References” section—an annotated list of resources that she used to assist in writing her book And, finally, Maria has included a Workbook—a section of exercises, tips, and additional resources. If you’d like to do more than read the story, perhaps start a journey of your own—using the prompts in this workbook would be a great way to start. (Incidentally, Maria has kept all the fairy letters in a 70-year-old talcum-powder box.) Those letters are a treasure that she intends to have cremated with her, when her time comes.
